Close your eyes.
What are your favorite memories from being outside?
Clear skies and colorful leaves on a perfect fall day? The excitement of an approaching thunderstorm in August? Perhaps you have felt the satisfaction of digging into dark soil to plant flowers? Or a peaceful walk in the woods after a stressful day?
Do you have memories of sitting under an old, magnificent tree simply to ponder and appreciate?
Now open your eyes.
Each minute, we cut down nearly 30 football field’s worth of trees. Every year, we denude, degrade, and erode billions of tons of topsoil through our deforestation, agricultural, and development practices. We are depleting our clean water sources. We can survive without oil. But clean water?
We are causing the destruction of non-human life - birds, butterflies, tigers, tapirs, fish, fungi, and everything in between - at an unprecedented speed. We have directly or indirectly killed nearly half of all life on this planet over the past 50 years. Clean air is becoming a privilege for the few. We are loading our atmosphere with CO2, which is leading to rapid, unpredictable, and catastrophic changes to our only home.
Earth has produced complex, beautiful systems over millions of years, including us. But we are radically changing and dismantling them in a short amount of time. What can we do to help reverse these issues and restore the health of our planet?
One answer is simple: let’s work with natural systems instead of against them.
Let’s help grow lots and lots of healthy trees. They help create stores of clean drinking water, healthy soil in which we can grow food, vibrant ecosystems that house and feed an incredible diversity life, clean air, and they help regulate the levels of carbon in our atmosphere.
Trees are one of Earth’s most powerful tools for creating a healthy planet.
While we are at it, let’s also care for our soil, ditch the chemicals and fertilizers, and get rid of grass in exchange for prairies and trees. Let's do everything we can to work with natural systems to promote healthy ecosystems where an abundance of diverse life flourishes.
Our greatest strength – our very existence – is borne from incredible and massive planetary diversity.
We are all rooted in shared resources. Our futures are tied together. There is strength in unity. Helping one helps all. The opposite is also true. By achieving good for all life and being stewards of our resources, we attain a brighter future.
Earth provides us with the solutions we need.
Our role is to foster and promote these natural solutions. Sometimes it is also our role to simply step aside to make room for life to do what it does best - create more life. Healthy native trees in abundance help create happy people and a more vibrant planet. Learn easy ways to help!
