Video | What's the Secret Ingredient in Compost Tea? WORM POOP!
Learn how we create the perfect environment for vermicompost.
Today we are going to talk about what makes our compost tea so special, WORM POOP!
Hi, my name is Joe, and today we’re talking about vermicompost, also known as worm castings, or just worm poop. Worms are a key part of the soil food web, which is a network of tiny animals and other organisms that help to make the soil healthy for plants. That’s why we use worms to help make our compost tea. Compost tea is a liquid fertilizer which we inject into the soil which we use to help feed the trees.
Now when you think of compost you probably don’t think of worm poop, you think of this: rotting food scraps and other odds and ends of rotting stuff. And you’d be right, but worms can help to enhance the composting process by making nutrients more readily available to bacteria, fungi and of course the trees!
But you can’t just throw a bunch of rotting stuff and worms together and get the worm poop that you need. That’s were these bags come in. We fill each bag with shredded paper and leaf mold, so that we create a comfortable home for the worms. We also keep the bags inside so that it never gets too hot or too cold. A worm in a bag is a happy worm.
Now we can go ahead and add those food scraps. But you want to remember that worms have squishy mouths, that can only break down squishy stuff. By adding water, we not only make things easier for the worms to munch on but but we also give them a much needed drink.
After a few weeks we are ready to harvest our worm castings. These bags are made so that the castings fall to the bottom, and can be easily collected, like so. And there we have it, the wonderful black gold, WORM POOP. A wonderful tool to help feed the trees. So next time you see a worm please remember to thank them for helping us to feed the trees.
