Video | Worried About Big Trees?
Think twice before you remove them.
Hi, I’m Fiona, and I’m here to talk about big, mature trees. We often hear people say their trees are moving too much in the wind, they’re too close to the house, or they are dying and need to be taken down because they’re a hazard. We find that strong, mature trees are the champions of your yard.
Big trees feel like a big risk, however these buddies are the survivors. They have withstood hurricanes, droughts, tornados, floods. And with preventive maintenance such as soil work, structural pruning, or compost tea we can make the small risk that they pose even smaller.
The risks of a large tree failure are usually overinflated by some people within the tree care industry. This causes a magnification of fear for homeowners and property managers. While we do acknowledge that there are some trees that are diseased, dangerous, or invasive that do need to be removed. We often find that treating the underlying issues or the root cause is the easiest and cheapest way to save a tree then simply removing it.
And their is so much to love about mature trees. They provide shade in the summer and let sunlight into the house in the winter; they hold soil and help with storm water runoff. Mature trees are vital cornerstones of our native ecosystems. Oaks such as this can provide habitat for up to 534 different species of butterflies and moths as well as plenty of other mammals and insects. We love these mature trees and we hope you love them too!
So before you remove a healthy, living tree from your yard, remember that no amount of money can transform a sapling into a giant. Only time. And when you see these big buddies around your yard I hope you don’t think of them as a threat but as a friend.
